Companion: Pabu, the Fire Ferret!

Personality:

Bolin is the quintessential definition of the perpetual optimist. Granted, he goes through a series of personal struggles and self-doubt from time to time, but the theme of his life is to be Mr. Positivity. With only rare exceptions, Bolin sees the best in everyone and everything around him. Much of this comes from an enthusiast’s energy that courses through almost all of his actions. Having grown up on the streets and now finally able to have more than a subsistence lifestyle, practically everything has become his favorite thing ever. He’s eager to accept living at Air Temple Island after the Harmonic Convergence so he can be with his friends, he immediately takes an adoration to Pabu when he first sees him, begging his brother to let him buy the pet, and he is almost constantly as excited as a puppy whenever he reunites with friends after not seeing them for even a few days. He’s got an optimist’s attitude that usually carries him along for an emotional ride that rarely is Bolin fully in control of.

This enthusiasm also bleeds into his desire to make his friends laugh. He’s got an strong sense of humor and frequently makes jokes, puns, and generally oddly funny statements to his friends with the intention of making them laugh and to bring his constant smile to everyone else’s face. This is most successful with Korra, Asami, and later on Opal; he makes a joke of “putting a sock in [Zaheer’s mouth]” to shut him up by doing so quite literally. While most of his humor is often ill-timed or during otherwise serious moments (such as attempting to construct backstories for Mako and him before their sting operation at the Misty Palms Oasis), he does manage to bring that much needed levity to his friends. Even during some otherwise serious moments, Bolin is often the laid-back one, not taking things ever fully seriously. Even in the final battle against Ghazan, Bolin cracks jokes back at him and gives his enemy a wink after revealing that he’s a lavabender as well.

One of the reasons for Bolin’s perpetual optimism is because, despite his tragic backstory of being orphaned at age six, having to live on the streets for some time, and even joining a criminal organization to survive, Mako has generally protected Bolin from the worst of it by being a fatherly figure as well as a brother. The downside to this is that Bolin has never truly developed a distrustful or skeptical bone within his entire body, producing a naïveté that could even rival Aang’s. He immediately falls in love with Eska without knowing her personality, but ends up realizing that she’s able to take advantage over him because of this, leading to an abusive and oppressive relationship that Bolin is far too scared to back out of, even to the point of getting suckered into a formal engagement. This optimist’s gullibility means that he isn’t good at reading people even despite the warnings of those he trusts. He blindly believes that Varrick is on the level and didn’t help incite the Water Tribe Civil War despite Mako’s insistence upon it—all because Varrick has been incredibly kind and generous to Bolin, allowing Varrick to use him against his own friends who are investigating him.

Tied to this is a do-first-then-think-later mentality when it comes to problem solving. He quite literally breaks into a pet store to retrieve Pabu from becoming snake food just to make him his pet instead of paying for him; he furthermore fails to actually close the snake’s cage afterwards, allowing the snake to come out and almost suffocate him. The same is exhibited when, despite being glad to no longer be bound to the Triple Threat Triad after becoming pro-benders, he goes back to Shady Shin in order to try to do muscle work for the triads in order to make up the monetary difference to get them into the pro-bending tournament, which leads to him getting captured by Amon and the Equalists. To put it mindly, Mako says it best when he says that Bolin has a “knack for getting into trouble.”

That said Bolin is perhaps the most emotional member of Team Avatar as he wears his mood and expression on his sleeves. He seems to fall into love with relative ease as he falls for Korra, Eska, Ginger, and Opal—all of which happen almost within instants of seeing them. For all that it encompasses, Bolin is something of an idealist when it comes to love, romance, and friendship, especially since he believes Mako is being completely silly for not coming to live on Air Temple Island after the Harmonic Convergence despite Mako insisting it would be awkward to live under the same roof as Korra after their dating fiasco. When he is happy, there’s almost always a smile on his face representing it. When he’s having his bouts of sadness, such as after discovering Mako and Korra kissing, Bolin can ball and become as huffy as a toddler. He’s rarely ever truly angry, though his seriousness can come into play when one of his friends is in severe jeopardy.

However, alongside this expressiveness is the downfall that he literally has no mental filter and will say pretty much any somewhat coherent thought that manages to resemble a sentence. Because of that, asking Bolin to keep a secret would never be the wisest of plans. Without even thinking about it, Bolin tells Asami that her boyfriend had kissed Korra without even trying to be sensitive about it. After witnessing a heartfelt reunion of Jinora and Kai, Bolin casually mentions that Tenzin will not be pleased to hear of it and, after Mako suggests that he shouldn’t tell Tenzin, he gleefully says that he wouldn’t want to miss out on the reaction. When it comes to planning and strategy, Bolin blurts out whatever crazy concoction of an idea he has as if it were a good plan. He comes up with the idea that he can literally distract Zaheer and his Red Lotus friends by pretending to be a lost hiker and doing bird calls. Bolin may have some semblance of street smarts, but it is certainly not book smarts, as evidenced by Asami beating him in Pai Sho 16 games in a row.

Despite being a constant optimist, however, there are times that he can become extremely awkward or depressed. In many ways, Bolin doesn’t have the calm, collected mind that his brother Mako has, which causes him to be plagued with self-doubt. While in Zaofu, he lets past frustrations of previous failed attempts to metalbend get in the way of a second offer to actually do so, and it also causes him to act falsely nonchalantly when others actually do offer to try to teach him. It even causes him to act oddly in front of Opal, despite already having an awkward encounter with her the day before for other reasons, when the simple answer is to let go of his foolish pride. And that depression made it so that he was even worried about taking a strategic shot against P’Li to disable her combustionbending in order to try to rescue Korra from Zaheer. He can also get flustered in relationships, not really knowing how to act when girls like him and aggressively avoiding problems instead of facing them head on. He’s terrified to death of actually confronting Eska about their relationship problems, and he tries to act supremely macho to Opal to try to win her over despite having already impressed her just by being himself.

But though he may have difficulties in relationships, Bolin is almost always friend- and family-focused. Though Mako has protected Bolin for most of his life from society, Bolin will stand and fight back—quite eagerly—for anyone that has offered to befriend him. Bolin fought along with his brother in the Spirit World to protect Korra’s body from the dark spirits while Korra was spiritually fighting against Unalaq, and Bolin comes and rescues Asami against her father Hitoshi while fighting at the airfields. Even above that protective attitude, however, is a willingness to forgive people and value them as part of his “family” even if they may not deserve it. Even after all of the abuse Eska puts Bolin through, he still ends up falling for her, and the two of them oddly leave on reasonably good terms. He also takes Kai under his wing and values him as part of the new airbender nation even after being immediately lied to once the police come looking for him.

In short, Bolin is a passionate and emotive man, looking out for others and ensuring that he gives his teammates a sense of levity and optimism in dark times, and yet Bolin ends up being harsh only against himself, always wishing that he could be better and shirking dealing with the problems that plague him. Yet he is a more than competent earthbender and lavabender, and his presence to Korra’s team means that he’s always got their back.
